10th week : We made it to North Cape! https://zoulouonroad.com/index.php/2018/09/11/10th-week-we-made-it-to-north-cape/ https://zoulouonroad.com/index.php/2018/09/11/10th-week-we-made-it-to-north-cape/#respond Tue, 11 Sep 2018 09:29:53 +0000 https://zoulouonroad.com/?p=1103 Continue reading "10th week : We made it to North Cape!"]]> Day 64 : We drive all day long to eventually make it to the North Cape, while celebrating our 10 000 km!!

We park on a parking located 6 km far from the visitor center because the access is free if we come by bike or on foot. So my masters cover themselves up with all the warm clothes they have and take their bikes. Only few kilometers separate us from the Grail 😊. 6 difficult kilometers though, the road goes down and uphill, and it’s freezing…(but it’s perfect for me!).

At least, we see some reindeers on our way, savouring these large and unmanned valleys. At the top of the cliff we can spot the North Cape…When we arrive there, the sky gets clearer and a beautiful view over the sea pops up!

That makes the perfect moment for a picture in front of the Nordkapp landmark. And it was just in time before a crowd of tourists joined us!

Even though there is a lot of tourists here, the site is huge and we can easily be alone. So we head further to the coast to see more of the site and savour the peacefulness this place offers.

Are we really, after 2 months of travelling, at the end of the world ? At the beginning of our trip we thought that it would be impossible to go up here with Campi. It seemed so far and unreachable but here we are! Safe and happy! So don’t let the fear of the unknown hold you back and just go for it!

Before coming back, we visit quickly the visitor center where is even an hotel and a high-class restaurant!

We warm up a little bit and then go back to Campi. The sky gets again cloudy. The weather changes all the time and quickly here. At night, we have only 5 degrees!

Day 65 : This morning, it’s foggy, rainy and windy. Since we are not in a hurry we decide to postpone our 18km track to the “real North Cape”, less touristic but 1,5 km further to the North, to the next day. It’s not worth doing this long hike in bad weather conditions with no good visibility. So today we take Campi and drive to Skarsvåg, claiming of being the world’s northernmost fishing village. Once we get there, we take a walk through this lovely hilly countryside inhabited by many reindeer herds.

We also come across interesting rock formations, one in the form of the arch of triumph, the other seems to be a Troll tongue : ).

We end the walk with a nice view over the fishing village with traditional wooden red-colored houses.

Day 66 : It’s time for a hike to Knivskjellodden, literally “the tip of the knife”. There is no fog, neither wind today, so it’s perfect to go see the Europe’s northernmost point, far from tourist cars. You can reach this point only on foot. The hike is not demanding and with little elevation. Along the path, we can see the North Cape Plateau from far. The touristic Cape looks actually more impressive thanks to its location on high cliffs with a view over the sea.

On the other hand, Knivskjellodden is a rocky edge at the sea level where

waves are savagely breaking on the rocky shoreline. I am not going into the water here… The nature is wilder here but it’s so quiet. We take a rest here, eating our lunch and enjoying the sound of crashing waves. We are proud to succeed our 2-month trip till the North Cape. Even if we have seen more impressive landscapes in Norway, this place is more symbolic for us, it’s kind of our first milestone that we accomplished at te very end of Europe!

The way back is quite hard for us as we start to be tired and the path goes more uphill. We arrive to Campi exhausted but pleased with our performance!

Day 67 : After having stayed for 2 days on the parking of the North Cape, it’s time to go South.

We start to miss the sun. It’s so cold here that I don’t even want to swim! And my masters don’t have enough clothes to put on. However, we still want to discover more that’s why we accepted to stay one week longer in Northern Norway, on a sheep farm! It took us a lot of time and effort to come to this part of Europe so why not learn as much as we can here? After all, that’s one of the purposes of our trip. And where can we learn more than from local people?

It is settled then, we drive to the farm, there are already expecting us later today! On our way, we stop for lunch next to Trollholmsund, an area dominated by limestone stones in the form of trolls. The legend says that the troll turned into stones because they didn’t arrive in their cave before the sunrise.

It is again a peaceful place, with a beautiful view over the sea, separated by a sand path. And this color combination of multiple shades of blue with the white sand is gorgeous and gives this spot a kind of zen spirit.

Thanks to the wind, there are a lot of waves and I am having fun chasing them! But I don’t dare go into the water as my infection is still not completely healed.

I may take some rest on the farm while my masters will be working. Apparently a lot of work needs to be done there… we’ll keep you posted ; )

PS : The photo album of our road trip in Norway is on our Facebook.

In the morning, we decided to go for another hike but shorter this time! The path starts with Kungsleden track, meaning “King’s trail” that is 425km long. At the beginning, the path goes through a birch forest and along a canyon. It leads to the meditation place where we take a couple of minutes to meditate and enjoy the beautiful view over the canyon 😊. On our way back, the path is made of wooden boards to facilitate the track.

We appreciated the Abisko parc for its nice forest lands and easy paths without any important elevations! This parc is one of the thing to do in Swedish Lapland. And even if its remains a touristic destination, thanks to its ideal location for Northern Lights observation, it remains a well preserved nature place. We still saw more reindeers than humans 😊.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Norway, again, but this time to see the Lofoten islands and the North Cape, the first milestone of our trip!

Day 58 : We decide to go to the very end of Lofoten archipelago, that gathers 5 islands over 150 km, from Fiskebøl to Å (yep, it’s actually a name of a city😊). We have to take a lot of tunnels, some of them have nearly dozen of kilometers under the sea. Campi doesn’t really like the long downhill and uphill roads where we create some small traffic jams 😊. On the first and biggest island, Austvågøya, we visit the main city, Svolvær. It is essentially a touristic destination known for its large offer of different kinds of trips such as sea eagles safari, Northern Lights hunting, fishing and sightseeing trips to the fjords…

But we just want to get some information about local hikes. My masters don’t want to leave me alone, we are a team now! And hikes are great for me, that’s what I like the most! Moreover, those excursions are quite expensive and we prefer to stay on budget to be able to travel for one year! So we go exploring the islands on foot. And if we see a sea eagle or a dolphin on our way, we will be even happier 😊.

On the road, we stop in local organic goat farm Gardsysteri to taste some cheese. It is tasty but cannot equal the French quality ;).

We end this day by a two-hour hike to Kvalvika beach, starting in Fredvang city.

It’s an impressive beach surrounded by two cliffs facing the Norwegian sea and that can be reached only on foot. When I see the beach from far, I can’t wait to jump in there even if it is freezing! But I want to enjoy this amazing spot 😊.

It’s such an amazing place here, in this untouched and wild nature, even though some campers put their tents here for the night.

This spot is actually another great place to observe Northern Lights over the sea. Unfortunately, at this time and till September, it is not really an ideal time for Northern Lights because it never gets dark enough to see them. It is true that there is no night at the moment so it’s not easy to fall asleep… Just look at the picture below that was taken at 1 AM!

Day 59 : Today, we head towards the last island, Moskenesøya, located in the South, to do a famous hike from the Reine village. We are really amazed by the surroundings as we approach Reine. This fishing village is surrounded by many cliffs and small islands in crystal clear sea.

We then start the hike to Reinebringen, a cliff with a breathtaking view over Reine. We are quite lucky because after many days of rain, we have beautiful weather today and the hike is not as slippery as usually. Actually, on our way from the parking to the starting point of the hike, many signs have warned us of dangerous hiking conditions (slippery, steep and rocky path). Some hikers coming back from the top have, however, assured us that the hike is feasible even though really hard. And it is indeed a demanding track because of the steep rocky and sandy nature path. Bur after 2 hours, we made it to the top to admire this fascinating scenery over Reine city. Just look at the pics below!

It’s definitely one of the best spot in Norway and it’s worth a detour if you are in Lofoten! Those 3km are worth every effort put in it! We will always be impressed by the perfect color composition of Norwegian landscapes!

Afterwards, we go quickly to Å city. It is the very end of Lofoten archipelago where the road ends and is replaced by an endless mountain range. We feel here like at the end of the world, in the middle of the Norwegian sea. We would be able to spend hours chilling out here but our adventure does not end here. We can’t wait to make it to the North Cape 😊.

On our way back, we make a quick stop at the Ramberg beach that caught our eye. What a beauty!

Day 60 : To not miss anything of Lofoten islands, we decide to make some quick stops in places recommended by the tourist guide. So we end up in the oldest fishing village of Norway, Nusfjord (well the entrance wasn’t for free so at least we took a picture in front of its traditional wooden houses).

Then we went to Eggum, a kind of stone amphitheater with a view over the sea (it’s not really worth the detour though) and finally end up in Henningsvær village located on an island.

We didn’t even miss a local tradition – wooden “fish dryers”. Dry fish, such as codfish, is actually a culinary specialty in Northern Norway.

All in all, we have a crush on Lofoten islands, there is such a wonderful scenery along the road, and especially in the South.

And last but not least, we took some hitchhikers today, a young Czech couple travelling for few months through Scandinavia. It was raining this day and we had some space in Campi so why not take them! We shared some really nice travel tips end experience, and they even played with me 😊. Those encounters make our trip much more enriching.

Day 61 : Today, we visit Tromsø, an important city beyond the Arctic circle. It’s another famous spot for Northern Lights. One of the main monuments to see here is the Arctic cathedral with its sharp roof.

During our visit of the city center, we come across a local market with foreign specialties, and taste some French cheese (yeah missing it)!

In the evening, we enjoy a beautiful sunset!Day 62 : Today, we plan a short hike to Nattmalsfjellet hill (297m) with a view over Ersfjordboten on Kvaløya island next to Tromsø. After only 2 kilometers, we arrive at the top. Again, a splendid scenery pops up in front of us.

We drive then again to the North. In the evening, we stop on a parking in the mountains, next to an old mine, Ankerlia, that we visit after the dinner. It’s a bit rainy and starts to be cold, so my master tries to make fire in the local fireplace and he succeeds! My masters seem to enjoy it and get closer, but I am so afraid of this big red thing!

Day 63 : Once again, we drive all day long. It’s rainy so we make no stops. At the end of the day, we stop in a remote place surrounded by mountains and forest. There is no internet, neither phone network. So what to do? Since we approach 10 000 km, we decide to change the engine oil to maintain Campi in good condition! But my master struggles at the beginning and it starts to rain again…Well, obviously, it wasn’t a good idea to get the oil changed in such a remote area with no phone network…we can’t get any help! But, eventually, we changed it! To calm down after this stressful moment, we make ourselves a nice dinner and go for a walk in the forest. Yeah, another problem solved! The one remaining issue is my little infection on my nose. It seems to be a fungus. So now I can’t swim in the sea or lakes anymore for a while :(… But the important thing is to stay positive! We can figure everything out. After all, we are almost in the North Cape, who would have believed it at the beginning of our road trip?!

It’s only 13 degrees so warm clothes are a necessity for my masters! But I am fine cause I run everywhere when there are no people and I can be free 🙂 The hike starts by a difficult one-hour ascent. At the beginning, we are surrounded by other hikers from the same boat but throughout the ascent, the crowd spreads out. At the top of the first part, we are almost alone! It’s time to take first pictures and eat, really quickly though because it starts to rain. Then we are ready to face the ridge, at 7th km of the hike. This is where the real adventure actually starts! The path looks quite steep and stony but more importantly, it is really narrow and seems a little bit dangerous… We can see a small queue forming on this steep part of the track as people in both directions move slowly and carefully. As there are just few meters on both sides before the steep path drops to the two lakes at each side, there is only one possible path. There is no room for mistake, so we wait until the path is free to move forward. I must be really careful where to put my paws…

I can feel that my masters are not completely at ease with this climbing part and I am not either… Fortunately, it takes us around 15 minutes to climb to the very top. And the view is just stunning!

We take a well-earned break and savour the view over this narrow band between Lake Gjende and Lake Bessvatnet, one has a beautiful turquoise coulour and the other is navy blue. It’s the best spot for photos! Further on, the trail still ascends until reaching the highest point of the track – a rocky plateau that peaks at 1 743 m. However, from there, the view is not as impressive as from the top of the ridge.

We still have 4 more kilometers to the parking. It’s a downhill path with one last beautiful view over the fjords and the village! What a hike! We loved it even though it was quite challenging!

Day 51 : Our muscles are really sore today, and so are my paws. So we decided to drive a couple of hours to move forward to the North. On our way, we see a sign to Trollstigen, meaning literally “Troll’s path”. We follow this sign to have a look on this touristic spot located between Geiranger and Andalsnes in the Geirangerfjord, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. We come across a serpentine mountain road with a steep incline of 10% alongside the Stigfossen waterfall. We have a beautiful view from Campi but as we drive uphill, the engine starts to roar…and we get a little bit dizzy from the height of the mountain ! After 10 minutes we eventually make it to the top. There is a big parking and loads of tourists heading towards the viewpoint over Trollstigen.

We then drive a little bit further to the Geirangerfjord … and we see some snow ! The second time in my life that I can touch the snow ! I am on cloud nine 😉. After this wonderful experience, we come back to the main road and head to the Atlantic Ocean Road, the reason why we didn’t go straight to the North but did a little detour by the West of Norway.

Day 52 : We start the day with the Atlantic Ocean Road from the city of Vevang. It runs through an archipelago in Norwegian sea. The road begins with Storseisundet Bridge, a slightly inclined bridge which is the longest of the eight bridges here.Alongside this road, we have an amazing view on a big number of small islands. From there, we head towards Trondheim, then to Sweden.

In the evening, we cross the border and arrive to the ski resort Are where we decide to spend the night.

Day 53 : In the morning, we decide to explore the Swedish mountains and go for a short sunny walk with a view over the hills.

Actually, it’s different from Norway. There are greener lands, lower mountain peaks… and my paws can heal again ! After some quick errands in local supermarket to fill up our supplies, which got nearly emptied in Norway, we take a long road to the North. It’s really easier to drive on Swedish roads because they are flat, wide and straight. In these conditions, we can drive 500 km in one day and that enables us to arrive faster to the North Cape. Even if the Norwegian landscapes are outstanding, it takes a lot of time !

Driving all day long can be a bit boring but we are happy to rest a little 😊. Fortunately, some reindeers make our day ! They walk happily on the road and don’t care about the cars passing by ! Some are, however, blocking the road…but even my barking doesn’t scary them! So we have to be patient and wait until they move away. Maybe my furious barking has finally helped a bit !

Day 54 : Today is also a rest day. We plan to do also 500 km. Again, we see many reindeers on our way. We get used to it now! Only some road construction work slows us down a little as the road suddenly becomes a dirt track for a few kilometers…

Then we cross the Polar Circle but we don’t stop at the souvenir shop and café because the fuel level gauge has been switched on since almost 100km and we are afraid that we won’t be able to get Campi started again if we stop there. The last 30 minutes has been a haunt on gas stations. There are so few of them here… I really don’t want to pull Campi, so we keep moving! Eventually, we come across a gas station! W-ouf!

Day 55 : We start the day by a short bike ride along the river where we stayed during the night. It’s good to move a little after two days of driving! We still have some hours left before the Norwegian border. In the afternoon, we arrive in Kiruna, the biggest city before the border. We decide to run some errands here. Then we find a spot for the night on a hill with a view over the city. We also discover a big iron mine on the other side of the city. After having done some research on the internet, we find that it’s one of the biggest iron mines in the world. Its origin dates back to the beginning of 20th century!

Day 56 : We stop by a tourist center in Kiruna to get some information about the hikes in Abisko national parc, our next destination in Sweden. We get there in the afternoon and immediately start our 12 km long hike. It starts with the Sami village where Sami people, aboriginal nomad people from Lapland, had their temporary shelters. The hike then leads to the top of Paddus hill (600m).

On our way back, we got lost because my mistress wanted to take another path so to make a round trip. But the path had no markings… so we did almost 20km but I don’t care! I am so happy to be free! And it gets dark really late so why not take advantage of it! Moreover, it was an easy peasy track, with no big elevations.

PS : As a reminder, all our photos from Norway are on Facebook.

On Sunday, we visit Oslo, a city not to be missed. We decide to visit the city center by bike. On our way, we pass through the garden of Royal Palace and stop by the huge city hall. We have a look inside to discover an oversized mural painting decorating the main hall and an organ. This building is quite special and is worth visiting. Unfortunately, dogs are not authorized inside so my masters visit it one by one so that I am not alone outside :).

We then visit the Akershus fortress. From the top, there is a beautiful view over the fjords where many ferries and cruise boats start their trip to the mountains. Finally, we go to the Oslo Opera House, surely the most popular monument in Oslo. Many people, locals and tourists, come here to enjoy sunny weekends with a view on the sea and fjords. This Opera House is special for its unique architecture and the possibility to walk on the building to the top. It’s really hot today so, with the authorization from my masters, I jump in the sea to get a refresh. And I have a lot of spectators here who seem to like my little show. Everyone laughs, and some even get out their phones. Maybe one day I’ll appear on Youtube ? 🙂 Anyway, you can view my water show on Facebook. Plouf! And our pictures from Oslo are here.

Day 43: Today is a day on the road to drive to the West of Norway. On our way, we see first fjords ! Such a beauty ! The roads along the fjords are not in such a nice shape though. Without any warning, they suddenly narrow down to one lane, often when there is another camping car in the opposite direction … so we take it slowly. Above all, we don’t want to damage our Campi. At the end of the day, we arrive to Preikestolen (“Preacher’s Chair” in English), a steep cliff which rises 604 meters above the fjords 🙂

Day 44: We wake up at 5 AM in order to arrive to the parking of Preikestolen at 7 AM. Everybody recommends us to start the hike early in the morning to avoid crowds at the top. This hike is indeed one of the most famous in Norway and during summer holidays it gets really crowdy! The price of the parking (20 euros) reflects the popularity of this site… We start at 7H30 AM and we are already surrounded by other hikers. It takes around 2 hours to do this 4km hike with a 350 m ascent. And it is difficult from the beginning! The first part of the hike is quite steep and slippery. Then the path becomes flat and pass across lakes and heathers. Once at the top, the view is impressive ! Thanks to its flat top hanging over the sea, it’s the best spot for pictures. Fortunately, there are not a lot of people this morning but on our way back, the crowd gets bigger…

Next, we head towards the North to discover other sites. This first trip made us want to see much more !

Day 45: On our way to Bergen, we stop in Odda, known for its famous 22 km track to Trolltunga (“Troll tongue”). Apparently, this site is even more impressive than Preikestolen because of its cliff coming out horizontally from the mountain above the sea. But at the tourist center, we were told that camping cars are not allowed to the parking and that our only option is to take a shuttle bus from the center of Odda (it costs 50€ for both of us, the same price as the parking itself by the way!!). With this shuttle, we wouldn’t be able to start the hike early in the morning like we wanted but we would be with loads of other people and would queue for about one hour at the top to take a picture ! It’s really not my thing…
Eventually, we decided to go for another hike that is shorter and less known. It leads at the top of Buarbreen iceberg. And the view is amazing ! In total it’s just 6km with 600m of elevation gain. But we have fun, it’s an adventure : the path crosses a couple of small rivers, with or without a proper bridge. At some places we have to climb with the aid of the ropes. It’s a lot of exercise ! I’ve slipped few times despite my paws that can do off-road ! Fortunately, my masters help me every time it’s difficult for me but they struggle as well :p. A strong river flow follows the path till the top where we can observe the iceberg. Such an amazing view on this eternal snow but it’s so windy !
We stay on the parking during the night, always with this beautiful view on the iceberg. We are waken up by the Viking cows of the nearby farm !

Day 46: We stay in the sourrindings of Odda to go for another hike, recommended by a local at the tourist center. It leads to the top of Eidesnuten mountain (903 m) within 3 hours. The path is steep again … and I struggle a lit bit with the ants that are everywhere on our way. As soon as I stop, they climb on me and that gets me so angry ! But the effort is rewarded at the top by another awesome view. This time we can see the Odda city, the sea, a lake and an iceberg ! Moreover, this hike remains unknown for tourists so we enjoy a quiet time up there.

It’s so hot though! As soon as we come back to the parking, we head to a nearby lake for a quick swim. The water is freezing…but it’s feels good to relax after such an effort!

Day 47: In the morning we discover that we parked next to a path that comes across 4 waterfalls. We decide to go at least to the first one as part of our morning walk but finally we end up at the top of the third one! The beauty of Norwegian landscapes simply makes us push our limits further and further. After less than 2 hours, we arrive at the top of Nykkjesoy waterfall, amazed by the surroundings. There is this huge flat spot in the middle of a mountain chain with a lake formed by the water coming from the highest waterfall. There is no better place to relax, enjoy the sunshine and the fresh air and listen to the sound of the waterfall. Heaven on Earth! Naturally, I have to try this crystal clear water 🙂
Afterwards, we drive towards Bergen but stop half way, on a nice spot with access to the beach. It’s still hot so we take a quick swim! In the evening, we wait for the lunar eclipse to come but it gets dark so late here, only around midnight. At that time we are already in bed…but it’s really cloudy so we wouldn’t see a thing anyway…

Day 48: Today, we wake up early to go up to Ulriken mountain (643 m), the highest of the seven mountains that surround Bergen. We start the hike at 9 AM and choose the shortest way to the top. It’s also the steepest one and we struggle to climb the rocky stairs. At the top, there is a lot of people due to the arrival of the cable car. There is also a restaurant and a souvenir shop. It seems like a famous spot for city tourists. Nevertheless, the view is nice over Bergen surrounded by the mountains.A couple of signs show that I have to be kept on a leash. Some people do not hesitate to remind us that there is a law for this in Norway in order to protect the nature. So we decide to respect the local law and habits and I am kept on a leash, at least when people are around :p.

After Ulriken, we visit the center of Bergen, passing by the fish market, the fortress and Bryggen district with its traditional wooden colored houses in front of the harbor. To be honest, I did expect more. We heart several times of Bergen as a charming city but Norwegian landscapes surrounded by fjords that we have seen are much more impressive… it sets a very high standard 😉 Anyway, the day was busy again, it’s impossible to do nothing in Norway. But we start to feel a little bit tired …

Day 49: It’s the end of the week full of long hikes and amazing landscapes. Now, it’s time to go further to the North. On our way we come across Nærøyfjord, the narrowest fjord in Norway, then we pass through Flåm, a city crowded with tourists waiting to take a local train trip to the fjords. Then we take the longest tunnel in the world that measures 23 km. Thanks to Campi we can see all this beauty comfortably from our new home !In the evening, we stay in the Jotunheimen national parc, surrounded by mountains and plan a trip for the next day 🙂 On day off and we are ready to discover the Norwegian scenery again !

Waouf!

PS : All our photos from Norway are here.

As promised, I’m gonna share with you my week on an organic farm in Norway, located next to the Halden city and the Swedish border.

I don’t even know where to start… There is so much to tell you!

First of all, I’ll do a presentation of the farm : It is owned by Jan, a really nice guy who loves animals ! He has two cute Jack Russells Maggie & Jack!

It’s love at first sight. Jack is a real sweetheart, nice to me from the beginning and loves to cuddle 🙂

Maggie is the boss, so she is more distant and is constantly keeping an eye on me, at least at the beginning. Of course, I am crazy running in every single place of the farm to discover new smells. But Maggie is the boss, so I try to respect her and obey to her orders 🙂

But I just didn’t get along with the cat. The first time he saw me, he ran away, and I was trying to follow him, while barking – finally somebody has respect from me, so I may abuse of it a little :/ Since then, I regret it a bit because the cat hasn’t shown up until after our departure. Actually, I was keen on meeting him …

Well, besides this moment, everything is going well. The land is huge and located in a remote part of Norway. It’s so quiet here. The farm is certified organic because the cows, about thirty of them, live the whole summer in the open air, eating only grass, just as wild cows do. Those cows are reared for the meat so there is no need to milk them 🙂

One week in this beautiful and peaceful place, surrounded by woods and lakes. Heaven on Earth! Finally we can rest a little after one month of travelling!

Since Sunday is a rest day, we go for a walk and then swim in the lake ! I just can’t get out of the lake and am swimming all the time whereas Jack and Maggie are carefully observing me from the edge. They are not really fond of water but hopefully I’ll convince them by the end of the week ! Anyway, they seem courious about my way of swimming and my passion for water!

In the evening, we watch the final of the Football World Cup… and yeah we are the Champioooons!

The rest of the week, we work from the morning till the afternoon, followed by a walk and a stop at the lake. Soo refreshing in this heat!

In the middle of the week, another woofer from New Zealand joins us! She is really cool, loves animals and is a professional photographer, so talented! So during our walks we make a couple of photo sessions. A big thanks to Maddie for those pictures ! You can view the whole album on my Facebook.

During the week, while my masters are working, I supervise the farm and Campi with Jack and Maggie.

I also do some check-up on my masters to see if they work well 🙂 My master fixes the fence for the cattle whereas my mistress mainly cleans the house and cooks healthy dishes ! But of course we taste local specialty – a moose meat served as a birthday dinner for my master! Yummy! It makes my master so happy since he has been eating veggie meals for quite some time! For the first time, he is outnumbered by vegetarians 🙂 My mistress, on the other hand, enjoys cooking healthy veggie meals 🙂 Of course, with Jack and Maggie, we always have a generous portion of meat!

Jan is really nice with us and gives us a day off on Thursday. He takes us to a hidden beach in Halden to enjoy the sea! Then we quickly run some errands. And that’s where we discover Norwegian prices for the first time! It’s quite expensive here even for the Parisian people, not to mention the price for a beer can, complains my master :/.

Anyway, this week was really enriching for us, meeting new people from different countries, learning their culture, getting to know the farm life and loads of walks and swims!

But it’s time for us to leave and finally discover the Norwegian landscape and Fjords.

Thank you once again for this wonderful week Jan, Maddie, Jack and Maggie (and the cat and the cattle). Best regards and good luck for the future!

In the afternoon we stopped at the ruins of Gräfsnäs castle to enjoy mostly the local parc and its lake. It was also a good opportunity for a short race with my master – view it here :).

Day 30: We drive to Vänersborg, alongside the Vänern lake, the biggest lake in the European Union, and the third biggest in Europe (the biggest ones are in Russia). We head to the tourist office to find out about some hikes to do in the surroundings but also to know where to watch the football match France-Belgium ! Bingo, the match will be broadcasted on a big screen in the center. Before settling down for the match, we went to the lake and enjoyed the view.

Day 31: We woke up early today, I have the feeling that it’s my mistress who made the plans for today ;)! We did 2 hikes in a row around the Vänern lake in the Halle- och Hunneberg ecoparc. First, we went up on the Hunneberg hill with its Museum of Haunting. A nice walk in the forest but without a view on the lake. The second hike led to the top of Halleberg hill with an amazing view on the lake. It’s so wide, it seems more like a sea !

Thanks to the early wake-up, we managed to arrive in time to the Trollhättan waterfalls. It’s actually a hydropower dam whose floodgates are opened every day at 3pm for about 10 minutes. At that moment you can see the water getting stronger in just few seconds and its real power coming to life. The hydropower has helped the city in its development.

A little bit further there is the Göta canal with its many locks in a row. It crosses Sweden, via the Vänern lake, linking the West coast to the Baltic sea. The sequence of 5 locks in Trollhättan is quite impressive. It can take up to 2 hours for a boat to get through !

To end this busy day filled with some amazing water moments (that I am the most interested about !) we went to the West coast to see a typical Swedish fisherman village, Fiskebäckskil. It is surrounded by charming houses, trendy restaurants and bars with live music ! Really beautiful and quiet surroundings. It seems that a lot of Swedish came here on holidays.

Day 32: Having fallen in love with this charming village, we decided to stay a little longer here to discover more of the Skaftö island. So we went to Grundsund. Such a beauty! A postcard view of small red houses with their wooden decks in front of the harbor. I guess everybody here has a sailboat, there are plenty of them !

We take a tiny rocky path leading up to the hills. It’s a nice walk, away from the crowds, with a view over the sea and its numerous islets. Many sailboats are navigating through. The path goes down and uphill and I am enjoying it! However, my mistress is behind us and takes her time. No wonder why, she is in flip-flops! So I run back and forth to check that nobody is missing 🙂

After this short unplanned trip, we head towards another village known for its lovely surroundings. It’s Fjällbacka located further in the North. This time, it’s a more touristic place, kind of a seaside resort but it still keeps its charm. It seems like The place to be 🙂 The village is surrounded by some high rocks with steps leading to the top. Of course, we wouldn’t miss an opportunity to go up ! On our way we have to pass under a narrow path with a rock stucked between two cliffs. Carefully, we take a picture under it and head quickly towards the steps and up to get out of this hole !

A couple of steps and we are at the top, with a wonderful scenery of the sea containing a number of scattered islands. Such a beautiful view, we wonder what does Norway hold for us !

Day 33: We are on our way to Strömstad, the last planned stop in Sweden. We chose this destination because it’s the departure for ferries to the Kosterhavet National parc with its archipelago. First, we visit the Northern island Nordkoster, the smallest of the two main islands. It takes us 1 hour to go up to enjoy a panoramic view over the sea and its lighthouse and then go down to the Southern island. To get there, we need to take a boat shuttle for a couple of minutes. A tour of the second island took us around 3 hours, across a forest, a point of view and a beach. It’s 45 minutes to go back to Strömstad – I am secretly dreaming of jumping in the sea as the waves gently touch our ferry.

What a wonderful sunny and active day ! We then take Campi and start looking for a place where we can chill and spend a quiet night. But there are no isolated places in the nature for camping in the surroundings… It seems that we are in the middle of a popular destination where campers are not really welcomed. Usually, we find easily a nice spot in the nature (that we keep clean of course !) on our Park4Night application but this time we can’t find anything ! So we try to find a place on our own and take a small road to the forest just before crossing the Norwegian border. At the end of the forest road we come across a wooden cottage with a parking. We nicely ask for a permission to spend a night on the parking with our Campi. The lady we asked accepts it and even recommends us a trip to the top of the local mountain, Dragonkullen.

Day 34: We don’t miss any opportunity to go for a hike so the choice to go to Dragonkullen was made very quickly ! 45 minutes and we are at the top, easy peasy ! Unfortunately, I can’t go at the very top because it’s a tower construction with a ladder that I am not able to climb with my paws… So my masters leave my downstairs while they climb at the top and I wait impatiently for them. It takes them a while to admire the view from the top over Norway and the two bridges connecting Sweden to Norway. Neverthless, I enjoy the view from downstairs while keeping an eye on my masters ! Then we go down to Campi and drive towards Norway. On our way, we stop quickly in a supermarket to buy a couple of things for us cause we’ve heard Norway is really expensive ! Sadly, there is one negative point of this day : my masters realized later on that they forgot my leash at the top of Dragonkullen ! If by any chance somebody goes there, let me know 😉

Finally made it to Norway ! We stop in the first city after the border, Halden, to visit it’s huge Fredriksten fortress. And the rumor is that there are ghosts here… After our stop in Halden, we head towards our first Woofing, on a local farm! I’ll keep you posted about my week spent there in my next post! So stay tuned 🙂

By the way, our pictures from Sweden are on my Facebook page 🙂

4th week : Roadtrip through Danemark https://zoulouonroad.com/index.php/2018/07/13/4th-week-roadtrip-through-danemark/ https://zoulouonroad.com/index.php/2018/07/13/4th-week-roadtrip-through-danemark/#respond Fri, 13 Jul 2018 17:14:16 +0000 https://zoulouonroad.com/?p=604 Continue reading "4th week : Roadtrip through Danemark"]]> Day 22: Before passing the border, we stop at Lübeck. It is such a beautiful city in Northern Germany with gothic architecture

.

It’s really nice so we have a walk throughout the city till the Holsten Gate, one of the relics of Lübeck’s medieval city fortifications. After the city tour, we have run some errands before the border, the dog food is cheaper in Germany :p. And then finally going to Denmark ! We spend a night on a beach. Really cool spot! I have a feeling that the Danes love my way of swimming, everybody seems to laugh when they watching me.

Day 23: Going to Rømø island which belongs to Vadehavet national parc. And with islands comes sea :D. And also nice hikes. It’s quiet here, just few people. And so flat. We went up to the highest mountain here, or should I say a hill, cause its height is only a dozen of meters. But I so enjoyed all the tiny paths in the sand. It’s kind of dry here. Dogs must be on a leash here (they have this kind of special closed parcs for dogs where they can run free). But I am lucky, I obey my masters, so they leave me running everywhere!

Afterwards we head to local beach, and what a nice surprise!

A seemingly endless beach where loads of cars, vans and camping cars are parking… Despite a sunny day just few people are in the sea cause it’s quite windy. But that does not stop me to play in the sea, then roll over in the sand, I so love that ! And there is a lot of space for everyone !

At the end of the day, we visit Ribe. It was an important harbor in medieval times. The city is built on a dam to hold back the sea. It’s amazing. We admire narrow medieval streets on our way to the center.

. But it’s quiet expensive here so we decide to move away from the center and find a nice spot for night. Bingo, we found a lovely spot, once again! It’s just next to a dam and so quiet. Denmark is actually a country of flat and vast landscapes with few people so it’s quite easy to find a nice spot for a night. We enjoy a breathtaking sunset over the sea 🙂

Day 24: Heading towards Odense, the third biggest city of Denm

ark. There is nothing special, but we can see an ordinary Danish city lifestyle, quiet, quite empty streets, some bars and restaurants, a shopping street and a lot of cafés.

We found once again a nice place for the night, next to the sea, on a wild beach with a view on the Little Belt Bridge. It’s also a place where my fellows go for a walk in the evening. I met some friends, and everybody admired my energy !

Day 25: Next stop Roskilde, a city known for its Viking Ship Museum.

It is located on Seeland island, about 30 kilometers from Copenhagen. And I played a little bit in a fountain, you know me 🙂

Day 26: Before visiting Copenhagen, we made a quick stop at the Jægerborg Dyrehave parc where deers live in freedom. We even saw some in the woods (but I can’t say who is more afraid of whom :D). After this nice short walk, we head to Copenhagen !

We park a little bit further from the city (15 minutes by bike) next to a huge parc with a beach (Amager Strandpark), where many local people go jogging, walking or enjoy many water activities. And many dogs come here to swim ! Then, we started by visiting the famous Christiania district (but we have no photos cause it’s prohibited !). This district is just crazy! It’s crowded with people of all styles, many bikes and dogs running everywhere ! Chaos in the center of the city ! And you can also find here a lot of restaurants, bars and others…, almost everuthing is allowed here.

We walked throughout the city before settling down in a bar to watch the football game. And I can take some rest before coming back to Campi (I have to follow my masters on bike) !

Day 27: We did some jogging in the parc with my mistress like local people do ;). My masters can imagine themselves living here for a while and me too ! There is water everywhere, located near the city center and surrounded by huge parc! We say goodbye to Denmark and head to Sweden. While crossing the huge Øresundsbron bridge connecting Copenhagen to Malmö in Sweden, a beautiful scenery just pops up in front of us .

By the way, you can view all of our pics from Denmark on my Facebook.

We stopped in Malmö cause it’s one of the biggest cities (the 3rd one) in Sweden and we won’t have time to visit other cities since we will just drive alongside the West coast towards Norway. And we were right to visit Malmö! We parked, not on purpose though, next to a dog parc with free access to agility parc. I could finally showed off my agility abilities which I have been training for 2 years in Nantes. And just behind it was a dog beach. I was totally on cloud nine! A short video of my show is on my Facebook !

Malmö is a nice clean city with a big parc and city hall (for more pics visit my Facebook).

We finished our journey alone in the forest with a view on the Rössjön lake.

Day 28: In the morning we enjoy a nice swim in the lake, the first swim of our trip. It’s so refreshing during those 30 degree days ! We were told that it’s unusually hot this summer and there was no rain since a long time! We made a stop in Falkenberg city with its historical bridge and on a sheep farm Öströö before having found a peaceful spot where to spend a night ! I played a lot with my new Border Collie friend whereas my masters were playing Mölkky.

Day 15: A hike in Hrensko. I LOVE IT, all the cliffs, I can run everywhere! And everybody seems to like me, all the cuddles I get, you can’t even imagine ! And there is an amazing river but I can’t swim there cause I have to take a boat first and I must wear a muzzle, such a nonsense ! Sometimes, I do not understand people… Fortunately, I got a chance to try the river afterwards. 10c° according to the guide, nice! (pics on my facebook !).

Day 16: After a full day hike to Czech gorges in Hrensko, we keep on with another hike to Dresden Bastei, a rock bridge in the heights near Dresden. We parked Campi away from the touristic area and decided to go to Bastei from there to enjoy a quiet walk. The uphill path is quite steep but with my four legs it’s easy peasy (my masters, however, are taking it slowly ^^). After many steps we finally reached the top to enjoy a panoramic view over the Elbe valley. And guess what, everybody really likes me and I’m getting plenty of hugs ! No need for a leash :).

After a four-hour walk, we settled in Dresden for a night. The town is big and spacious, the Germans really do have good abilities in urban planning. We run a few errands in local shopping mall, and I took escalators for the first time. I must admit it’s a little bit scary. In Germany, you can find bio markets in shopping malls, that’s cool. I will have some quality leftovers, Yummy ! (Well, I was a little disappointed afterwards, my master got it wrong and took vegan sausage…he really must learn some German instead of spending time taking online Czech lessons !).

Day 17: Heading towards Berlin ! We’ll visit the city tomorrow.

Day 18: Visiting Berlin. We parked Campi easily on a free city parking next to the Treptower Parc. It’s good to start a walk in a green area of the city before heading to the noisier one ! On our way to the center, we found a gigantic Soviet War Memorial designed to commemorate Soviet deaths in World War II.

Heading then to the Berlin Wall. Wouha all those tags for liberty and peace are awesome (check my Facebook) ! What I like in this city is the fact that dogs are not kept on a leash and can walk as they want. It’s so much easier to get to know each other and check each others butts 🙂 After the city tour, we leave for Templin where we found a nice spot for the night. We’ll visit the city tomorrow.

Day 19: There is a market in Templin ! After having played in a fountain that was on our way, my masters bought traditional German sausages and I had all the fat with my dinner :D. Great to gain some forces for the next day ! Afterwards, we went to national parc of Jasmund located in the North of Germany on the Rügen island in the Baltic sea. We parked Campi next to a nice restaurant with a fish shop and homemade bread ! They also give free treats to dogs yeaah.

Day 20: Sports day, 30 km bike trip. The pace is quite fast but I have no troubles to keep up. Don’ worry, my masters wait for me when going downhill (and I wait for them when going uphill ;)). Sadly, there is no place where I can swim as the Jasmund’s cliffs are too steep and not really accessible. But this beautiful panoramic view is worth it ! To end this day, we enjoyed a Grill Evening All You Can Eat at the local restaurant. I have a lot of leftovers ! Nice change from our Campi food 🙂

Day 21: On our way to Denmark we stopped at a nearby beach next to Bad Doberan. It’s a charming village and there is a steam-powered train that passes through the center of the village !! But what I appreciate the most is the beach and the sea ! We stay there all afternoon then head towards Poel Island for a quiet night.

Day 8: We are in Prague, at my mistress’s family place and life is fine. I am spending a lot of time with Peggy (their ten-year-old doggie lady), we play a lot and we have long walks throughout the day in the neighbourhood. Czech dogs are lovely !

My masters left me alone for a couple of hours to enjoy a Beer SPA in Prague… taking a bath in the beer, what a funny idea !

Day 9: Quiet day, we stayed at home. I love the father of my mistress , we go for a walk 5 times a day avec Peggy, it’s heaven on Earth !

Day 10: On our way to Podebrady, a spa town one hour from Prague. It’s amazing, there is water everywhere ! Between the Elbe and all the fountains, I can’t even decide where to jump first (have a look on my facebook page for more pics).

Day 11: Another day at home with Peggy, I am almost tired with all those walks. The time passes so quickly when I am having fun ! Wouf !

Day 12: My masters went to the car repair shop again to get Campi back, hopefully recovered. I care a lot about Campi, it is our new house now ! Once Campi back in Prague, we left for the czech countryside to spend a peaceful weekend. I am very happy, Campi got much better, it makes far less noise than before, I can truly relax now 🙂 ZZzzzZZ

Day 13: The life in the countryside is amazing… A big garden to protect, walks in the woods, I can live here forever ! But we have to get ready for the next steps. My master works on Campi so that it can carry on till the North Cape whereas my mistress cuts my fur to have a better look!

Day 14: Finally, the day has come, it is our departure and the end of planned stopovers. We leave to the unknown. After the last walk, we leave for Hrensko. Campi found a nice spot to spend a night on our way there.
